Although Terpening Wilder Law litigates all types of criminal cases, its focus is on “white collar” criminal defense: business crimes. Every day, as our lawyers have for many years, we effectively litigate criminal tax, securities, insider trading, false claims, antitrust, healthcare fraud, mortgage fraud, and general business fraud cases. We have the acumen and intelligence to delve into the complexities of factually and legally complicated business crime cases. However, once we study them, we are able to take those complex facts and business concepts and explain them in a way that juries and other decision-makers easily understand. This facilitates a fair presentation of our clients’ case, giving them the best chance at an optimal resolution.
Founding partner Will Terpening leads the white collar criminal defense practice at Terpening Wilder Law. Although he litigates all types of business crime defense cases, his practice focuses, in particular, on federal tax and federal securities matters. Terpening recently obtained a defense trial verdict for the taxpayer in United States v. Appelbaum, No. 3:14-CV-504, 2016 WL 427944 (W.D.N.C. Feb. 3, 2016). Other tax successes include obtaining an acquittal for a prominent tax attorney after a two week criminal jury trial in Charlotte, and negotiating a no-prison time tax case plea for a foreign citizen which was structured to achieve her primary goal of avoiding deportation. In addition to these and other tax successes, Terpening spent the first years of his career practicing exclusively securities work for a premier securities litigation group at a national firm based of Atlanta. During this time he focused on SEC investigations and litigation, FINRA matters, and private securities litigation.
We are skilled at every stage of the white collar cases, including pre-indictment negotiation, managing and assessing large volumes of discovery, trials, and appeals. We use technology, strategy, and strategic partnerships to provide a defense that is as (or more) comprehensive as any large firm could provide, at a substantially reduced cost. As well as value and efficiency, we offer something else that many larger firms do not: a close relationship between lawyer and client. Terpening Wilder Law clients can always pick up the phone and reach their lawyer or paralegal, or expect a prompt return phone call. Our clients can count on us, day or night, to provide them with solid, wise counsel, and can rest assured that their Terpening Wilder Law team will be even more focused on their case than they are.
